When the owners of this Upper West side apartment consulted with Daniel Barsanti about their newly acquired “white box,” the designer needed few instructions.“They’ve been clients for 24 years. Our firm had done two previous projects for them,and each was specific to its location,” explains Barsanti, who, with professional partner Pat Healing, heads the Westport-based design firm Healing Barsanti and its retail arm,HB Home. “The Connecticut place looks like a fine country home out of a movie.The beach house looks like a beach house. And this was going to be a Manhattan pied-à-terre.” The clients appreciate a well-designed life, but don’t like it over the top,Barsanti explains: “Not too fancy,not too cheap— but something that looks like a decorator was here.”

Barsanti and HB staff designer Christopher Desmone,who collaborated on the project, began, Barsanti recalls,“by trying to create a sense of architectural interest without being obvious.” The addition of soffits made more muscular the space’s rectilinear qualities; in the entry and living room, glossy walls with horizontal lines incised into them “cre- ate eye movement and visual interest at a place in the apartment where the views aren’t spectacular.” Furnishings are few, but notable for their high quality: a reclaimed teak dining table built by a French craftsman; Marina sofas by Nancy Corzine.“To redecorate in 15 years and be able to keep the case goods and just reupholster—that’s the story we want to tell,” Barsanti says.The designer pronounces himself pleased with collaboration number three.“Hi-rise apartments can get too ‘glam-y,’” he says. “These clients keep it real.”
