THE reading ROOM
“The homeowner loves blue, but it’s a hard color to use in a warm way,” says Eastridge, who resolved the matter in the library with combinations of deep teal and earthy browns. A chair was designed to fit the 16-inch kneehole of the laquered wood and nickel desk, which once belonged to Helena Rubinstein. The limestone-topped Morgan cocktail table and mohair Dodds sofa are both from Eastridge’s own collection. Visual Comfort floor lamps were fitted with custom shades.

A clean-lined contemporary four-poster creates intimacy in the master bedroom. Chairs and ottoman merge into one unit, forming a chaise for two to share. Jack Larsen fabric with Lurex thread supplies the right amount of luster.

With an adventurous palette and works by the clients’ favorite artist, Eastridge Design brings warmth to a new home in Princeton

When Princeton-based designer Katie Eastridge of Eastridge Design begins a new project, she pays close attention to her clients’ possessions and passions—a list that inevitably includes art. “Art is highly personal, and it’s important to select a backdrop that makes the homeowners’ collections look good,” says Eastridge. For this five-bedroom home in Princeton Ridge, the designer knew that colors could not clash with the palette of Michael Kovner, a contemporary Israeli artist whose work the homeowners collect and admire.

The fact that the house, like many in this wooded community, is flooded with natural light, thanks to a back wall of windows, meant Eastridge could introduce intense color to create intimacy in its soaring spaces. Linen/velvets, mohair, and leather upholstery were paired with Holland & Sherry moleskin for pillows and patterned rugs to create a relaxed setting for the family of five.

The dining room, the site of large holiday celebrations, called for a bit more formality, dramatically delivered by an inlaid rosewood table designed to seat 18. More night-time drama was created in the library, where a portion of the mahogany bookcase opens to reveal a secret stairway that leads to a third-floor observatory, where the homeowner, an amateur astronomer, keeps his telescope and a window on the natural spectacle of the night skies.
