Parisian awnings inspired the gray and white palette of Lynn Morgan's Upper East Side pied-à-terre. A coral ottoman and matching pillows pop in the living room. Rattan chairs and sisal rugs are Morgan staples; the topiaries and red corals are from Treillage. Photograph by Peter Margonelli. www.newyorkspacesmag.com/article/going-coastal
living the dream
Interior Designer Gail Shields-Miller and her husband converted a 1,800-square-foot cedar beach house and the 800-square-foot guest house, both straddling a funky narrow lot on Fire Island, into a year-round residence where they could work. Here, a stone path leads to a gated entrance, kept private by ungroomed bamboo and wisteria. Photograph by Anastassios Mentis. www.newyorkspacesmag.com/article/living-dream
a place on the lake
Designer Barbara Ross added a flexible upholstered headboard, equipped with a built-in, purple-laminate nightstand that folds down between twin beds in this late-1980s home on Lake Waramaug, Connecticut. Photograph by Peter Margonelli. www.newyorkspacesmag.com/article/place-lake
window on the woods
When graphic designer Peter Yates and publicist Ashok Sinha found this little cabin in the woods in the Berkshires in 2001, they judged it as too little, with too much wood. But in Yates’s eyes, the ugly duckling had the architectural merit to be a big open-plan house. Custom planters and rolling square beds add a modern touch. Architect Paul Cha said he wanted to "engage people’s perceptions from different perspectives," in this 2,500-square-foot Union Square loft. Daylight-simulating fluorescent bulbs inserted between two layers of window glazing mute exterior noise and increase illumination in the master bedroom.
