October 2010

It’s an exciting month in New York. Foliage and fashion change overnight. Holiday vibes start taking shape—but first, there’s Halloween. To get you in the spirit, we suggest heading to Westchester County for a nighttime tour of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery with historian Jim Logan. We also make a trip to Edgar Allan Poe’s old house on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, where a new visitor’s center by architect Toshiko Mori is taking shape just 150 feet away from Poe’s landmark cottage.

There’s an electric synergy between past and present, fine art and design: And it’s the driving force behind what we call “High Design”—an aesthetic that is strong, with a serious mission, and, sometimes, a little over the top. The concept is illustrated in the locations we feature this month: Architect Gal Nauer collaborates with Giorgetti to bring modern sophistication to a penthouse at The Plaza; Darren Henault transforms a West Village town house into a showcase for world class Art Nouveau antiques; and Francine Gardner, of Intérieurs, helps Universal Motown Records president Sylvia Rhone create a Downtown apartment that is both showstopping and serene—not an easy act to pull off. October is a time of daring transformation:

Start thinking about your costume, New York.
