Guest Blogger & Designer, Joe Ginsberg
In 2010, when Tempo Luxury Home Collection successfully debuted at the New York International Gift Fair, I was repeatedly asked how I incorporated designing a home furnishings line into my already existing company Joe Ginsberg Design. The company, which provides custom interior design, fine arts and specialty materials, served as a great springboard for creating Tempo.
Over the last few years while observing the economy take a downwards slide I saw the need for high-end, hand-crafted home furnishings at an affordable price. While designing Tempo I knew I wanted each piece of the collection to have a custom-made, contemporary feel and being based in New York allowed me to use the edginess and vibrancy of the city as the inspiration for my designs.
Every Tempo category, which includes lighting, pillows, rugs, glass objects and tables has been influenced by my fine arts background of painter, photographer and sculptor; it all goes back to the creative hand and my origins as an artist.
Watercolor painting was the first step in designing Tempo’s lighting and glassware collections of Fizz, Vista, Smart Lights, Belle du Jaar, and Jackknife. When blowing the glass for the Fizz Collection I tried to replicate the effect of watercolors on paper transitioning from opaque to transparent. The Tibetan rugs of the Dream Collection were also based on my watercolor paintings and are 100% silk, hand-knotted. The silk perfectly conveys the softness of the original watercolor sketches. The images used in Tempo’s pillow collections are taken from my original photography, and I based the tables in the Gotham and Le Chek collections on geometric sketches.
Has all of this creativity been successful? So far so good—as of now the hand-blown, glass hanging lights are available at ABC Home in New York City and Anthropologie stores nationwide. The Winter Collection of pillows which are images of photographs I shot in Central Park, was bought by Barneys New York just before Christmas last year and to my delight were a sellout.
As someone who creates for a living, it is extremely satisfying to be able to translate my ideas into products that the public can purchase and enjoy in their homes.
