5 Up-and-Coming Artists

New talent that stands head and shoulders above the rest

These four fine gentlemen, and one lovely lady - which equals five very talented artists - managed to catch the eyes of some very picky New York Spaces editors. No easy task. As we honor all things art this month and next, we thought we'd shine the spotlight on those who managed to stand out from the pack.

And give you a quick glimpse into who they are...

Colin Roberts

Your hometown? Los Angeles, Calif.

What is your favorite medium to work with? I like working in a variety of different mediums. Lately I've been working in plexiglass, but I also do a lot of molds and casting so I frequently work in clays, plaster, resins and silicone.

Your favorite piece of art? One piece that definitely moves me is the painting by Philip Guston called "One."

The best place you¹ve ever traveled to or visited to date? I would have to say Gokyo Peak in the Himalayas, Nepal.

What does the future hold for you? Showing in galleries as well as creating permanent installations and art direction for hotels, stores, houses, and other architectural spaces conducive to creative settings.

Rob Szot

Your hometown? I was born in Morristown, NJ, but grew up in Texas from the age of 2.

What is your favorite medium to work with? I only work with oil paint cut with a bit of extra linseed oil.

Your favorite piece of art? I was walking in Brooklyn and this 4 year old handed me a salvation army receipt he had written the word "die" on. I didn't know him, but it struck me as the most honest piece of art I've ever encountered.

The best place you’ve ever traveled to or visited to date? Brooklyn is best.

What does the future hold for you? More painting. I'm not real good at much else. Higher rents and death (I assume).

Loren Berger

Your hometown? Dallas, Texas

What is your favorite medium to work with? Photography

Your favorite piece of art? “Fountain,” a 1917 work by Marcel Duchamp. This is a urinal and that is the extent of it. The thing about this “sculpture” is that it shows you how to approach the most mundane of subjects with a free mind and to throw out conventional perceptions. The art critic Calvin Tompkins wrote that "it does not take much stretching of the imagination to see in the upside-down urinal's gently flowing curves, the veiled head of a classic Renaissance madonna or a seated Buddha…”

The best place you’ve ever traveled to or visited to date? A back parking lot; a dumpster; a construction site. I worked as a private investigator for many years, and I spent a lot of time hanging out at these places. Now, a lot of my photography is based on finding and exploring interesting elements at these sites. I’m challenged by trying to bring out a rhythm or harmony in meaningless, random urban settings.

What does the future hold for you? I would hope to continue to work with design and architecture firms – as well as with individual buyers – in the placement of my work in various public venues. I’ve recently started to market my work to high-end design projects in Asia, and am generating some great response there as well.

James Greco

Your hometown? I grew up on Long Island in a town called Bethpage.

What is your favorite medium to work with? That changes too often to say.

Your favorite piece of art? Anything from Jannis Kounellis.

The best place you’ve ever traveled to or visited to date? Davenport, Calif.

What does the future hold for you? I hope to just be healthy enough to continue making work.

What does your work look like?...

Bernd Haussmann

Your hometown? Northshore of Boston and Western, Maine

What is your favorite medium to work with? Anything that leaves a trace, preferably paint

Your favorite piece of art? Nature. Art is nature, nature is art.

The best place you’ve ever traveled to or visited to date? Just beneath the very top of a high mountain, not yet being able to see what is on the other side.

What does the future hold for you? If I knew I would have one less good reason to make art.
